General Information

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC) estimates that 8,000 to 10,000 victims are treated annually in U.S. hospitals for injuries associated with the tip over of furniture. The CSPC also receives reports about 6 deaths each year.

Although the CSPC reports approximately 6 deaths a year, our research indicates that this number may be significantly higher.

Unfortunately, furniture related accidents are on the rise; these are several reasons why:

1. Modern furniture is lighter than furniture of the past.

2. Televisions are extremely heavy and front weighted. Televisions are located in children’s bedrooms. Televisions are often placed on unstable carts or dressers

3. Televisions come with video inputs located at the front of the unit. Video games can be connected to these inputs. An excited child can pull on the input inducing a television to topple.

New LCD, Plasma and Flat screen TV’s are making there way into home. This is good news is that many of these newer TV’s can be wall mounted. The bad news is that   the older, larger televisions that were once in the living room and family rooms are moving to the kids room and other rooms and may not be placed on a secure base.

Dressers,, Bureaus, Cabinets and other furniture need to be secured to the walls Doors or drawers can open and only a little weight is needed to make them unstable. Bookcases look like ladders in a child's eye and if the try to climb an unsecured bookcase, it and its contents can come tumbling down on them
